FLOWER OF LIFE
The vagina, the flower of life, is a wonder of nature, a sacred symbol of creation. Universally shared, yet always uniquely expressed through a complex variety of form, pattern and palette. Artist, activist and naturalist Marisa Papen shares her uncensored Flower of Life, counter-culturing our current community guidelines. With this evocative piece she furthers her quest to free ourselves from misconception and shame in the ongoing cultural war against the human body. Marisa believes body freedom should be a basic human right. She expresses: “There is no such thing as sinful skin. Our naked bodies are always in humble integrity. There is divine poetry in our sexes”.
The image of a vagina is mostly non-existent in the art world. It’s often seen as too taboo rather than the powerful muse that she is. Yet how can something so exquisite, human and vital not inspire great works of art?

Flower of Life is the first ever NFT of a vagina — a historic and powerful statement.
In April 2021, we offered it for sale exclusively as an NFT on foundation.app. In a world full of fungibility, where everything appears to be exchangeable and interchangeable, Flower of Life is truly non-fungible. There is only one of its kind, both as a work of art, and its subject matter.
It is our hope that Flower of Life can infuse the wave of NFT’s with depth, meaning and purpose.
Perceive Pure, Receive Pure
When we perceive, we conceive, we receive. The first time we encounter an object, idea or image, our intuitive self translates what we see. Our understanding is created innately through feeling — our reading is pure. Yet, far too often our perception comes loaded with stories, whether our own, or inherited by culture at large. When you view the ‘Flower of Life’, view it free from judgement, free from history, free from language.
Opening the Legs of Culture
We rarely see vaginas in our current culture & media, and if we do, most likely it’s in the context of pornography. Having such a limited vulgarized relationship with our body is both disempowering and disingenuous. Seeing sexuality this way makes it hard to actually connect to ourselves because it deprives us from seeing the magic of our existence and the possible sexual spiritual sensations offered by deep states of intimacy. To open the legs of culture is to get real about our origin and so thus our true selves.
Spiral of Shame
For centuries our relationship to the vagina has been colored with guilt and embarrassment. Still to this day, women all over the world are told to hide and be ashamed of their bodies, their vaginas being the epicenter. Shame tends to weaken us, it suppresses self love and eventually shape-shifts into fear. Seeing clear through a lens of fear is almost impossible because the unclearer you see yourself, the lesser you’ll feel free, confident and strong as you truly are.
Unlike the penis, the vagina is not in plain sight. If girls want to learn about their intimate parts, they need guiding curiosity. But we teach young girls that what’s between their legs is something to be shy about. Shame dims their innocent questing soul. And now a great amount of courage is required to be able to approach their own threshold. It’s important to re-awaken curiosity and free young girls from shame. Let’s teach them to be grateful for every part of their body. Let’s teach them the complex cycles of life. Let’s teach them truth.
Flower of Life
I am a sinless seed
I am the seed of my Mothers apple
I am the seed of the seed of the seed of the seed
I am the seed of the original seed
Through her sacred flower
I gave birth to myself
I descended Mother
The light of Earth
I covered myself with the blood of Christ
Washed myself with the flow of life
I am veiled by nature
As a Fleur-de-Lis
I am given a gift
A shell of shielding soft skin
My fingers follow my truth
Touch upon my flesh
Profound pleasure when kissed
Behold, What a shame if missed
I do not deny myself
I am not a forbidden fruit
For the sake of sacredness
I open my leaves of unity
My Holy Fruit
This is Our Origin
This is Our Naked Truth
